Vicarious Trauma & Compassion Fatigue

The cost of doing what we love or used to love

There is a price to be paid for being witness day after day to the pain of others. Accumulated exposure carries with it consequences for both client and caregiver. In this workshop, you will be encouraged to become aware of the physical, emotional and spiritual signs and symptoms that indicate your level of need for care.

Through a balance of concepts and experiences, you will learn about:

  • Why we are resistant to seek help
  • Warning signs & symptoms
  • The difficult issue of self-care
  • Personal assessment: what to observe when we’re too busy to notice what’s happening
  • Vulnerability, restoration, resilience, and the creative value of “useless time”.

This workshop is for those who work as care- givers in fields such as psychotherapy, pastoral care, nursing, social work, hospice and bereavement, shelters for the homeless & battered, sexual assault, suicide hotlines, HIV/AIDS, prisons, veteran’s affairs, emergency care, teaching and human rights.

Two Days You Will Not Soon Forget

You will be provided a safe and nurturing space where all will come to learn through many modalities the cost of work without sustenance, the value of paying attention to one’s truth and the will to pursue the question, “What do I need?”
As professionals, you meet challenges each and every day with deep commitment and competence. You offer your expertise and compassion often at the expense of time, health and self-care. In this workshop, you will be invited to muster the courage to introspectively ask important questions and come to know a piece of truth about the need for care.
During our time together, you will be encouraged to safely risk participation in a variety of experiences. The deepest respect will be given to your personal choices, pace and boundaries.
