Also, whether you are seeking traditional talk psychotherapy, a combination of talk and body centered movement therapy, workshops and retreats, skills groups, a retreat facilitator, retreat or workshop development, a speaker, a performance artist, or a safe place to meet people and dance with abandon, you will probably desire someone whose life has segments that you can identify with. In the past 20 years, I have worked as a psychotherapist and substance abuse counselor in a correctional facility, in a rural mental health clinic, in an Acute Partial Hospital program and now in my own practices in northeastern PA & northwestern NJ. My patients have ranged in age from about 9 to 90. The pain they endure has come from childhood and adult trauma as well as physical, emotional, sexual, societal and institutional abuse that shows itself in depression, anxiety, thought and personality disorders, as well as self-harm and addictive disorders. Whatever the problem, the common phrase from every patient when speaking of their pain is simply, "I just want it to stop!" I am also a member of both MaleSurvivor: the National Organization against Male Sexual Victimization serving as a volunteer clinician on their international retreat team, and SNAP: Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests. And what about me personally? Simply put, I am a human being on his journey through time. Some of that time has been blessed with moments of love and joy and some with abuse and turmoil. Some with groups of compassionate travelers and some with those called "men of God" who were anything but. Some with a woman and children and some with kindred queer souls. Some as counselor and some as patient. Some in a monastery and some "in the world". Some working for myself and some working for others. Some just wanting it to end and some wishing for a lot more time. Some with debilitating confusion and some with moments of wonder and clarity. Some creative and some frustrated. Some with wonderful teachers and some with controlling preachers. Some with uncontrollable rage and some with naps and teddy bears. Some being what others would have me be, and now some to be who I am, do what I love, and help others achieve the same. Is it any wonder that my favorite outdoor past time is riding roller coasters!
